For
many parents, they appreciate the importance of regular check ups for their
child's teeth, eyes, and ears but draw a blank when it comes to a spinal
check-up. The first thought of many parents is my child doesn't have back
problems.
The most important pathway or lifeline between
your child's brain and the rest of the body is the spinal cord. There are
literally billions of nerve fibers that send messages and communicate with the
rest of the body. If there is any blockage or irritation along the spinal
column it can put the spine in disharmony, setting up dis-ease (lack of ease)
that can result in generalized weakness of your child's body, lowering
resistance, and the inability of the child's body to properly fight infections
and disease.
Blockage of nerves caused by tiny fixations or
misalignments of the spinal vertebrae are what chiropractors call subluxations.
The cause of subluxations can be the result of many factors. One is
injuries to a baby's spine caused by a difficult delivery. Health problems
early in infancy can be traced back to a difficult delivery. Other causes
of subluxations are major slips & falls, and other accidents attributed to
an active childhood during development. A well know French obstetrician
Frederick Leboyer states, "We know very little about our bodies, so little
that we forget the importance of the spine.... Why, when the vulnerable spine
has always been curved, do we insist on holding the newborn upside down and
jerking the back straight?"1 Dangling a baby by the
feet immediately after birth can cause damage. An infant's spine is very
susceptible to injury.
Chiropractic is the only profession that corrects
and fixes vertebral subluxations. By adjusting and correcting spinal
distortions or subluxations, the child's spinal, postural, and nerve stress
reduces, which can have a powerful effect on many aspects of their life.
After chiropractic care positive changes have occurred in the child's physical
health, behavior and emotional states. Among the observed effects of
subluxation correction have been improvements in emotional, behavior, and
neurological problems such as hyperactivity, asthma, anxiety, low mental
stamina, inability to concentrate, discipline problems, and even low grades.1-4
Below is a list of common conditions. It is
essential to get his/her spine checked for vertebral subluxation - not because
the doctor of chiropractic is treating your child for these conditions, but
because all children need healthy spines, especially if they are ill.
| Scoliosis |
Ear Infections |
Colic |
Cough |
| Hypertension |
Nervousness |
Poor Posture |
Constipation |
| Asthma & Wheezing |
Irritability |
Skin Disorders |
Neckaches |
| Bronchitis |
Bed-Wetting |
Croup |
Sore Throat |
| Frequent Colds |
Poor Concentration |
Painful Joints |
Arthritis |
| Eye Problems |
Hip, Leg, Foot Pain |
Arm, Shoulder Pain |
Sinus Problems |
Because subluxations do not always represent in
pain, it is very important to have your spine, as well as your children's spine
checked for subluxations. Some of the warning signs that your spinal
column may be out of alignment:
| Chronic Fatigue |
Hip or Shoulder Higher |
Shoulder Blades Flared Out |
| Hyperactivity |
Frequent Falling |
"Noisy Bones" |
| Skin Conditions |
One Foot Turned Out or In |
Joint Aches |
| Neck Tilt |
Can't Stand Still |
One Leg Shorter |
More and more families are discovering how
chiropractic can naturally improve not only their own health, but the health and
vitality of their children.
