Chiropractic with Babies and Kids

by Dr. Gordon Fimreite

We take care of a lot of families, which means we take care of a lot of kids. When new patients get started with care they get an opportunity to see me work with children. The most common question they ask is, “aren’t you afraid of hurting them?” I say no and explain why. In my office, there’s a poster on the wall of a drawing of baby during the birth process. You can see in this poster the distress on the newborn. I explain that when a child is born, there is over 40lbs of force put on the baby spine as the head is being tugged, pulled and twisted. The shocking truth is there is less force to pull a baby, by the head, across the room than the birthing process.  And no one in their right mind would even think of doing such a thing. By pulling and twisting the head with such force, it damages the neck. Dr. Gutenburg, a German Medical Doctor did a study on 1000 babies after the first two weeks of birth. He found that 800 out of those 1000 or 80% had damaged to the upper neck by the skull during the birthing process. If there’s damage in the upper neck (brain stem), that can affects every organ in the body because that’s where the brain exits from the skull to communicate to the rest of the body. It’s no wonder we’re seeing children with the inability to heal and end up with learning disabilities, asthma, allergies, ADD, physiological problems, etc.  The lifeline (the brain and nervous system) can’t properly function and heal because of damage from day one. Please visit our Chiropractic & Children link.

Kids respond so well to chiropractic and it’s amazing how instinctual they are. Kids really enjoy getting adjusted, because they can feel it’s doing something. It’s so rewarding, because children are given the opportunity to develop normally without the challenges that brought their parents to our office in the first place.

What’s the “Pop” or “Crack” Sound?

by Dr. Gordon Fimreite

Unfortunately there’s an audible sound that happens with a chiropractic adjustment. I say unfortunately because most people think that’s what the objective of chiropractic is. There could be nothing further from the truth. The objective of the chiropractic adjustment is to restore nerve and nervous system function by removing pressure caused by accidents, poor posture, birth trauma, etc. etc. These blocked nerve and nervous system patterns have devastating consequences to the function of our body over time. So the sound during the adjustment is not the objective. In fact there are several chiropractic techniques that don’t elicit the sound so often associated with chiropractic. The sound during the adjustments happens in response to the sudden change in pressure in the spinal joint, along with nitrogen air molecules coalescing together. It’s similar to opening a Champaign bottle - the sudden pressure change along with the air bubbles coming together makes the sound. When people share their experiences of chiropractic with others by saying their chiropractor “cracked” or “popped” their neck or back and now feel better. I can see why some people have a skewed sense of what chiropractic is. I’d prefer to hear, “my chiropractor is removing nerve pressure and I feel great!” The sound during the chiropractic adjustment is NOT bone rubbing on bone. That is not the case at all. Bone rubbing on bone would be called arthritis and it would be exceptionally painful. The noise during a chiropractic adjustment is simply air pressure in the spinal joints.

 18 Steps to Lose Weight

by Dr. Gordon Fimreite

Follow these tips to stabilize blood sugar and insulin
(glycogen), maintain lean muscle mass and
Stay thin for the rest of your life!
  1. Chiropractic - reduces nervous system stress to increase function & health to the body.

  2. Eat Plenty of Raw Organic FRUITS and VEGETABLES & EXERCISE (Food found in Nature) and stay away man-made food. Eat enough good foods to have the energy to exercise.

  3. Do not have the following in your home — Bread, potatoes, pasta, chips, savory snacks, cakes, cookies, sweets, candies, chocolates and sugary drinks. By doing so, you remove the temptation to consume them.

  4. Never skip breakfast  – Research has repeatedly shown that people who eat breakfast perform better at work, get less tired during a long working day and have more energy than those who only snatch a cup of coffee while they sprint for the bus

  5. Avoid Eating Late At Night — Key for losing weight and keeping it off. Try not to eat after around 7-8pm, as digestion slows. Avoid going to sleep on a full stomach.

  6. Eat Foods with Omega 3 – Cold water fish, such as wild salmon, sardines, trout, etc. OR  Fish oil capsules.  Omega 3 is a fat-burner, muscle-builder, wrinkle-eraser, skin-saver, depression-lifting brain-booster

  7. Avoid stress — Stress causes the release of the hormone cortisol, which stimulates insulin release to keep pace with rising blood sugar levels. Excess cortisol increases appetite and promotes storage of fat.

  8. Laugh to Lose Weight Laughter reduces stress hormones, strengthens the immune system, lowers blood pressure, acts as a muscle relaxant, triggers release of the body’s natural painkillers, and improves health and well-being.

  9. Get Your Greens — Green vegetables alkalise/basic and re-mineralise, which is vital for good health. At least one green drink daily is ideal – try fresh vegetable juice, a green powder like spirulina/green superfood mixture with water.

  10. Green Tea — Prevents the absorption of fat, helping to keep off excess body fat.  Supplementation with the most plentiful green tea polyphenol, EGCG, stops diet-induced obesity.

  11. Drink Water– Consume in ounces the amount equal to one-half your weight in pounds. Drinks like tea, coffee, cold drinks, fruit juice are dehydrating.  fluoride in water is harmful to the thyroid gland.  In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one’s metabolism as much as 3%. One glass of water will shut down midnight  hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

  12. Sleep to Lose Weight — Sleep deprivation causes overeating.  When we don’t get enough sleep, the hormone believed to increase feelings of hunger increases.  Another hormone that suppresses appetite and burns fat stores, is decreased.  Those most sleep deprived craved carbohydrate-rich foods, such as sweets, pasta, and breads.

  13. Listen to your biological clock (follow a routine) — Researchers have found that the “clock,” potion of the brain also controls appetite.  It appears that synchronizationof meal times has an impact on our weight — so eat regular meals at regulartimes to prevent overeating.

  14. Avoid fad diets and slimming pills — Human beings love quick fixes and are eternally seeking a ‘magic potion’ to lose weight.

  15. ResveratrolResveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes and is a constituent of red wine. Been shown as an anti-inflammatory, blood-sugar-lowering, anti-cancer and other beneficial cardiovascular effects

  16. Eliminate Food Cravings — Just 1/2 teaspoon of the amino acid glutaminetaken at meals three times per day will stop the constant cravings for sweets and high glycemic carbs.

  17. An apple a day (or two or three) — Despite their relatively high sugar levels, apples exert a stabilizing effect on blood sugar, in part to their high fiber content and phloretin: a flavonoid-type phytonutrient found exclusively in apples.  Buy organic and eat the skin potion as well.

  18. Detox  Detoxification programs to rid toxicities in our foods, hygene products (lotions, makeup), air pollution, medications etc.

Camel in the Parade

by Dr. Gordon Fimreite

This was the second year in a row that we entered the camel in the Pet Parade. The very first year I entered a camel in a parade was in 2002 for St. Patrick's Day Parade downtown Chicago  It was such a unique idea that national chiropractic publications ran a story on it.

One the most common questions I get is, "where do you get a camel." The answer to that is a farm in Wisconsin. They rent all types of exotic animals for events such as parades, birthday parties, kids rides, etc. I've had the opportunity to use 3 different camels and all where born, raised and trained in Wisconsin. See our photo page link with pictures of the camel.

 Community Dinner Presentations

by Dr. Gordon Fimreite

We frequently do Community Dinner Presentations with a goal of changing peoples health and lives. Please visit our Calendar of Events to see when our next presentation is. Our Community Dinners are free and open to the public. We encourage you to invite friends, family and guests.

We do Community Dinners for 3 reasons. The first reason is, I'm passionate about health information and more importantly sharing health information. Secondly, nobody seems to be doing anything to bring health to our community. We all recognize that our country is getting sicker and sicker and our children are sicker than ever, but nobody is doing anything. This our way of doing something. The third reason for our Community Dinners is a way for us to reach out to those who may consider using our services for their health needs. Inquiry calls are welcome at 708.352.3352.

Almost 70% of Kids Expect to get Sick

by Dr. Gordon Fimreite

My office is across the street from the local high school and next to a pediatric clinic, so inevitably I get a lot of children as patients. I find the health and the trend of where health is going unbelievable. We are living in the first generation where our children are expected to live shorter life expectancies than their parents. As a result, the average life expectancy is expected to drop by 5 years. I find this unacceptable considering the overwhelming amount of knowledge available to make sound health decisions. We have everything available to live incredible lifestyles, which would prevent the majority of diseases plaguing this country. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s not the lack of knowledge, but perhaps a lack of will power. And this lack of will power is taking years off the back end of our children’s lives, not to mention the quality right now. One of my patients is a teacher who is active in the school’s health and wellness programs. I put together a survey and with his assistance we administered the survey to 116 students between 14 and 18 year olds. The survey was an attempt to evaluate what children think of health and what their views and perceptions of health is. I asked in the survey if it’s normal for people who are 30, 40, or 50 years of age to be heavy, in which 32% said it was. I also asked if it’s normal to get a disease in that age group, in which 34% said it was. The question I found most remarkable was if the children themselves expected to have one or more of the following; be over weight, have at least one disease, don’t have fun, feel tired & sleepy, have digestive problems, or expect none of the above. What I found disturbing was 67% expected to have at least one of the problems listed above. If we could only go back in time, say 25 years ago. It would be interesting so do a similar survey and compare the answers. Diseases that are household names today, were not even on our radar screen 25 years ago. I think you could have asked the average 18-year-old twenty five years ago what diabetes, asthma, allergies, ADHD/ADD was, most would tell you they have no idea. Today everyone not only knows what these terms mean, but they have friends and classmates with these very diseases, if not inflicted with the diseases themselves. The reality is that most of these diseases are preventable. When are parents going to take a real look at their children’s lifestyle? When is our education system going to put a reality check on the consequences of poor lifestyle choices?  Do most kids (and even adults) even know the answers on how to maintain health, which prevents disease?

Can I Adjust My Own Spine?

by Dr. Gordon Fimreite

When someone is stretching or bending in certain positions, they may feel a “crack” or “pop”. I frequently get asked if they are adjusting their own spine. The quick answer to this question is no, it’s just joint noise. There is nothing corrective by stretching and bending. To fully answer the question, I have to let you into my thinking as a chiropractor when I approach patient care. The first thing is to determine where the problem is. It’s based on several factors; X-rays reveal misalignment, SEMG & Thermography referred to nerve scan, will show nerve tissue pressure and/or damage. Palpation (feeling abnormalities in the spine) will support the findings above. You can also observe the posture and bilateral weight difference of individuals to give more indicators on the effects of subluxation. Once the area along the spine has been determined as subluxated, it now becomes a process to adjust it into the proper position. The way the body works is if you’re 30 lbs overweight and you want to lose it, you have to diet consistently over time. It’s a consistent directional effort to make that change. Much like a body builder who develops his muscles over time or someone who wears braces to straighten their teeth. It’s just the way the body responds. It takes time and consistency. When people think that the audible noise that happens when they stretch or bend is an adjustment. I have to remind them that the noise is NOT the objective. The process of taking pressure off the nerves by adjusting the spine in a specific direction based on x-ray findings is the objective. One of the easiest ways to see if the adjustments are effective is to take post x-rays at the end of the care plan and perform a nerve scan. Proper exercises must be incorporated with the adjustments to support the alignment. The most significant thing that happens by realigning the spine is the pressure and/or damage on the spinal nerves and spinal cord is slowly being taken off. This is significant because the life that controls all our healing in our body comes from the brain and is communicated through the spine to get to all the organs and systems that run the body. By stretching to a point where there is an audible, well … it’s just noise. There’s no directional realigning taking place. There would be NO post x-rays revealing realignment. Therefore there would be no pressure off the spine and nervous system. The real objective of chiropractic is to realign the spine and take pressure and/or damage off the nervous system. This is why people get relief from a wide variety of symptoms. The nervous system is what controls all the health and healing in our body. It’s the adjustments that allow that expression of life in our body. To find out more about what the “pop” or “crack” noise is, please read my blog entitled, What’s the “Pop” or “Crack” Sound?

Does The Doctor Get Chiropractic Adjustments?

by Dr. Gordon Fimreite

I often get asked if I get adjusted and the answer is a definitive YES!  I've been adjusted for over 16 years regularly and it's not for pain or a problem. I get adjusted to keep myself healthy. It's part of my Health Plan! Most people don't consider where they'll be with their health 5 or 10 years from now. My goal is to get healthier every year. What you do right now with your health will affect your future health! Healthy habits now can not only make you feel and look younger, but put years on your life. It can also eliminate years of pain and suffering. There are so many scientific studies validating chiropractic, I personally find it hard to believe why everyone isn't on on-going chiropractic care. Why let things break down before doing something about your health. It's so much easier to maintain health than to let it break down then fix it. To be healthy is to build health and be proactive in preserving YOU, a gift you received at birth.

"I'm Just Getting Old"

One of the most common phrases I hear when at Health Fair performing spinal screenings – checking attendees for nervous system and spinal pressure, tension and/or damage is, “I’m just getting old.” I’m always amazed at how many people actually have symptoms. The number is staggering. What I find more alarming is the majority of them are doing nothing to resolve the problem - hoping it will go away even though it’s been there for 3, 5, or even 10 years. Problems typically don’t get better with time, they get worse. So the resounding thing to say for that person being screened is, “I’m just getting old.” Or “It’s just part of aging.” I am writing this section to tell you, "No it’s not part of getting old, it’s not part of aging". The natural state of the body is NOT having symptoms. Most problems are the result of old slips, falls, accidents or poor posture/ergonomics over time THEN doing nothing about it. I’m not talking about resolving those problems with drugs (anti-inflammatory and over-the-counter drugs). Drug treatments do NOT cure or solve nerve pressure due to mechanical force due to old accidents, falls, poor posture or gravity on the body over time. As the result of doing nothing about these problems they get worse and lead to premature degeneration and aging. It’s no wonder that the average senior citizen takes 4-7 medications everyday. When I actually start a patients who had said they're getting old become amazed on how their body changes after we start removing stress and tension off the spine through the chiropractic adjustments. Often I will start a patient who has tried everything to resolve their problem. They bring me their x-rays from their medical doctor. The patients reveals the bad news, "my doctor said I have arthritis (degeneration) and it's just normal with aging". When I look at their x-ray film and show the patient the part of the spine that is deteriorated (arthritis) and go up or down 1 or 2 vertebrae say where is the degeneration in this part of the spine, it actually looks perfectly healthy. I can't resist to ask the patient if the vertebrae above and below the problematic area are the same age. The answer is always "yes." Why is one area along the spine deteriorated and the vertebrae above and below perfectly healthy. The reason is that the area that is deteriorated is wearing quicker as the result of tension and stress over time. The very life that created the body and runs the body is damaged at the spine – this literally squeezes the life from the nerve communicating to the organ. Symptoms have a purpose. They serve as a warning sign – giving the body a sign that something is wrong – yet most people do nothing and let their bodies deteriorate.
