Back pain doesn't discriminate. Whether you're a student attending back-to-back lectures, a professor grading papers at your desk, or a staff member on your feet all day, the demands of campus life at Auburn University can take a toll on your spine.
As a chiropractor serving the Auburn-Opelika area, I see first-hand how common back issues are among students and university professionals. The good news? With the right approach, most back pain is preventable—and treatable.

Here are some practical, science-backed tips to help reduce and manage back pain:

1.  Lighten Your Backpack Load
Many students unknowingly carry 15–20 pounds on their backs every day. Overloaded or improperly worn backpacks can lead to poor posture, muscle strain, and long-term spinal issues.

Quick Tips:
  • Use both straps to evenly distribute weight.
  • Keep the load under 10–15% of your body weight.
  • Opt for a backpack with padded straps and waist support.

2. Optimize Your Study or Workstation Setup
Whether it’s a dorm room desk or faculty office, poor ergonomics can lead to back and neck pain. Recommendations can be found at: Proper Ergonomic Setup: Handout and Video

For better posture:
  • Keep your screen at eye level to avoid hunching.
  • Sit with feet flat on the ground, knees at 90 degrees.
  • Use a lumbar support cushion or roll up a towel for lower back support.

3. Stretch Regularly Between Classes or Meetings
Sitting for long periods shortens your hip flexors and weakens your core—both major contributors to back pain.

Try this simple stretch routine:
  • Shoulder rolls – 10 reps
  • Neck stretches – 15 seconds each side
  • Standing backbend – 10 seconds
  • Seated spinal twist – 15 seconds each side
Set a reminder every 30–60 minutes to stand and stretch!

4. Move More Throughout the Day
Movement is medicine. Walking between classes or meetings can help maintain spinal health and reduce inflammation.
  • Take the stairs when possible.
  • Walk and talk during phone calls.
  • Do a 5-minute walk every hour when studying.

5. Check Your Mattress and Sleeping Posture
Sleep is when your spine recovers. But if your mattress is too soft or too old, it could be causing more harm than rest.
Sleep tips:
  • Replace your mattress every 7–10 years.
  • Try sleeping on your back with a pillow under your knees, or on your side with a pillow between your legs.
  • Avoid sleeping on your stomach—it twists your spine unnaturally.

6. Don’t Ignore the Signs—Get a Professional Evaluation
If you’re experiencing persistent pain, stiffness, or discomfort, don’t just “push through it.” Chiropractic care can help identify the root cause and offer natural, drug-free relief.
